Review: Impulse Soccer for the iPhone

Impulse Soccer exemplifies the pick-up-and-play genre of App Store games to a tee.  The game has only two modes (single or multi-player) and six different levels.  It ‘s a turn-based soccer game that provides a lot of fun.

It’s not a perfect game by any means.  Its strengths and weaknesses intertwine in that the game is simple and easy to play that some players may get bored after unlocking all of the levels.  Still, this shouldn’t discourage you from checking out this very attractive game.

GAMEPLAY

Each game of Impulse Soccer is played the same.  You start each turn by queueing up the moves of the three players on your team.  You do this by touching the player and dragging your finger in the direction you want the player to move.  You ‘ll see the direction indicated by an arrow.  The length of the arrow shows you how much force you put behind the move.  If you make a mistake, simply touch the player again and start over.

Once you are satisfied with your selections, touch the ‘GO ‘ button to start the turn.  Your team will move as you instructed.  The computer team will also move, butting heads and bodies with your team in an effort to get the ball in the net.  You will repeat this process until a goal is scored.  Each game is played until three goals are scored by one of the teams.

Goals can be scored one of two ways:  1) the traditional, kick/nudge the ball in the net method; or 2) knocking all of the opposing team ‘s players into one of the two nets.  For example, if you see one of the other team ‘s players really close to one of the nets, and you ‘re player is also close, have your player plow right into him to knock him into the net.  If you are successful, that other team ‘s player will remain unusable in the net until a goal is scored.  If you get all three of the opposing team ‘s player in the nets (it doesn ‘t have to be the same net for all three), you will get the goal.  3-on-3 play then restarts in the middle of the field.

Although the game appears to be a bit shallow at first, there ‘s actually a decent amount of strategy involved.  You may, for example, think you have a good angle on the ball and queue your player to strike it, only to be knocked out of the way by the other team and watch as your player goes sailing into the net and get knocked out for the rest of the round.

Multi-player works the same way.  Using one iPhone, you and a friend will take turns queuing up moves.  After you queue up your team, touch ‘GO, ‘ then hand the phone to your friend.  After she queues up her team, she will also touch ‘GO. ‘  Then hold out the phone and touch ‘PLAY ‘ to view your moves.

You start the game with one available level.  You must play through each level before unlocking the next one in sequence.  Notice I said play, not win.  The game did not appear to get more difficult as I progressed, but the change of scenery was nice.  There is a traditional soccer field, an ice rink, and an unconventional final level where both goals are at the top of the screen.

AESTHETICS

Much like the game itself, the game is designed in a simple manner.  The characters themselves are sort of cute, especially when they cry or get angry due to what ‘s going on in the game.  The sounds are also simple, but I felt that they added to the cartoonish feel of the game, so I left them on.

There aren ‘t many menus.  After opening the game, you select either Single or Local multi and then a level.  If you need to pause the game, there ‘s a refresh symbol in the lower left corner.  From here, you can either continue or go to the main menu (which then, again, asks you if you want to play single or Local multi).  Everything is easy to navigate due to its simplicity, and I like that.

CONCLUSION

If there is a knock against the game, it ‘s that it isn ‘t very deep.  After you unlock all six levels, there isn ‘t much left to do in single player but play them over again.  Still, there is enough fun to be had here, especially when you consider the multi-player mode and that the game costs only $0.99.  If you only purchase games with a lot of depth, you might want to pass here.  But if you ‘re looking for something quick and fun, Impulse Soccer provides a lot of fun at an attractive price.

Impulse Soccer is available now in the App Store, at a price of $0.99.
