Apple to Purchase LED Camera Flash Components? To Be Used for iPhone Camera?

2316704315_872fb5a035.jpgAppleInsider is reporting that Apple is planning to purchase LED camera flash components, presumably to be used as a camera upgrade in a forthcoming iPhone revision.

People familiar with Apple’s initiative claim the electronics maker is seeking allotments of LED camera flash components in the tens of millions for delivery during the 2010 calendar year, meaning future iPhones — and possibly the iPod touch — are the most likely recipients of those parts, due to their sales volume. Those same people say that Philips’ Lumileds Lighting sector is believed to be the front-runner for Apple’s business and may have already secured the design win.

Recently introduced phones in direct competition to the iPhone are equipped with 5-megapixel cameras with flash capabilities. iPhone on the other hand only has a 3.2 megapixel camera and no flash. Compile this along with recent rumors that Apple has placed orders with OmniVision to supply 5-megapixel camera sensors, it looks like an improved camera is on it’s way to the iPhone this summer, or possibly even the iPod touch.
