Quick Look: iSamJackson soundboard app [iPhone App Reviews]

JAiB reviews iSamJackson

iSamJackson is a soundboard app featuring the voice and attitude of the one and only Samuel L. (Samuel-ell) Jackson. I’m not usually one to play around or even try Soundboard apps because, frankly, most of them look like rip-offs. iSamJackson doesn’t stray much from the formula, but he’s made enough of an impression on me that, yeah, absolutely, I’ll give the iSamJackson soundboard app, filled with Samuel L. Jackson quotes, a try.
Wait, let me do that again:
Aw HELL YEAH, I’ll give iSamJackson a try!

Let’s get the smaller stuff out of the way first. There are two extra features to this app aside from the soundboard: a personality scanner and a query function. The personality scanner is a pretend fingerprint scanner that you press and hold to generate a quote, as though Samuel L. Jackson himself were evaluating you. The query function simply seems like a way to add an extra tab to the app, and bullet point to the app store description: all you have to do is think of a question, and then double tap on the screen to hear Samuel L. Jackson’s (I can’t stop saying his full name) response. It’s really the vocal equivalent of an “ask the magic 8-ball app”, and you’ll get answers even if you never think of a question.

Samuel L. Jackson can make almost anything sound awesome, but don’t just take my word for it – try this widget:

The audio quality is pretty good (I’m pretty sure they’re .wav files, based on the extra DLC quotes I got), but what’s best about the app is the variety. There are over 100 different recordings in the app.  I was actually working on getting an exact count, but I stupidly decided to play one along the way, and the resulting laughter made me lose count. Sorry about that.

I won’t spoil any more of the quotes than I have to, but I will mention that the app does contain a vigorous “OH HELL NO!” and an equally vigorous “HELL YES!” (and these didn’t seem to be marked as explicit – so they should be in the “clean” version). If you’ve got a favourite Samuel L. Jackson quote, there’s a decent chance it’s in here. If the 100+ recordings of yelling or menacing whispering aren’t enough for you, though, there are plans for more as DLC. There are currently two 20-quote packs (Sports or “MMO pwnership”) on sale for $0.99, and I’m strangely tempted to buy one.

So does iSamJackson do anything really different, something intuitive and new that you’ve never seen in any other soundboard app? No, not really. But if you absolutely, positively, gotta have yourself a soundboard app, then it might as well be the one with Samuel L. Jackson in it.

iSamJackson (explicit) is available for $2.99 on the App Store. There’s also a clean version of the app, but that’s like going to the zoo to see a lion with no teeth, no mane, and no limbs.
