Pediatric SymptomMD for iPhone – A Great Resource for Parents [iPhone app reviews]

Pediatric SymptonMD iPhone app

Pediatric SymptomMD is an iPhone app that serves as a reference source for when a child is ill, and offers care guides that help with decisions on what level of care is needed in those situations.

I ‘ve only just installed the app this morning, but I ‘ve had a very good look round it and think it ‘s very impressive.

Here ‘s more on the app from its App Store Description:

The Dr. App referenced in Nov 2009 issue of Parents Magazine! New Swine Flu care guides included.

What should you do if your child develops a fever, cough, vomiting, rash, sore throat or head injury? When can your child return to school or child care after an illness? These are medical advice questions that all parents have. Health problems can arise anytime “ evenings, weekends, when you ‘re at work or traveling or your doctor ‘s office is closed.

Pediatric SymptomMD is designed especially for these times. The care guides help you make smart decisions on what level of care (if any) is needed and how to provide speedy symptom relief for minor illnesses or injuries you can manage on your own.

Pediatric SymptomMD is derived from the clinical protocols used by pediatricians and nurses in 10,000 practices and 400 nurse advice call centers in the US and Canada. They have been tested for 15 years on more than 150 million symptom calls.

And a quick look at its main sections (which are the tabs on its bottom nav bar) and features:

Symptoms:

In this section you can browse information on symptoms and how to evaluate and respond to them via an alphabetical index, a body area index, or use a keyword search.  The app is also kind enough to keep track of your recently viewed items.

The screens for individual symptoms are very detailed and offer clear structure and advice “ the top bar tabs on these screens are: Definition (main details on the symptom), When to Call, Care Advice, and Summary.

Some of the detail pages have images to illustrate a symptom or treatment

The When to Call screen is an especially useful one “ as it offers easy to follow sections that suggest when to: call 911 right away, call your doctor or go to an ER now, call your doctor within 24 hours, call your doctor during a weekday, and when to employ self care at home.

You can email summary and care advice from the summary section.

Seek Help:

This screen is basic and easy to use, as is appropriate “ it contains links to: Call 911, find a nearby emergency department, call your child ‘s doctor (you need to have filled in those details in the Options section), or call another doctor.

SeekHelp

Dosage:

Provides dosage charts for some commonly used over-the-counter medicines.

Options:

Only one thing to do here “ fill in your child ‘s doctor information.

More:

Offers a good selection of Special Pediatric Topics “ covering things like separating myths from fact on fevers in children, a run-down on cough and cold medicines (and some great tips on home remedies that can be used instead of these!), and lots more.

The app offers a good disclaimer as well “ reminding that no guide of this type is perfect, and that you ‘ll need to use your own judgement when using it, and always contact a doctor when in doubt.

The author of Pediatric SymptomMD is also the author of a good list of printed books on pediatric telephone triage and advice, and other related subjects.  The list of doctors and medical experts who served as reviewers for the pediatric guidelines is lengthy as well.

A Definite Keeper for Me

This looks like a near must-have app for parents of young children “ a great reference to have around for health problems small and large; but here ‘s hoping none of us have frequent need for it.

I spotted this app via a good review by Kristen at GiggleApps.

You can find Pediatric SymptomMD in the iPhone App Store now, priced at $1.99.
