Feeddler RSS Reader – My Favorite iPad RSS App Now Works on iPhone

Feeddler RSS Reader iPhone app

Feeddler RSS Reader is  now a universal app that will run on the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad.  It is a featur-rich RSS app with full Google Reader sync support.

This app originally came out for the iPad only and it quickly became my favorite RSS app for the iPhone’s new big brother.  It has remained a favorite and an everyday essential app, so I’m very glad to see it hit the iPhone as well.

I’ve had the app for a couple of days, and so far it is looking nearly as good as it does on the iPad.  Hit the break for some more details on Feeddler, some screenshots, and a few of the things I like so much about it

Here is a slice of the app’s App Store page with description and features listings for its Pro and Standard versions:

Feeddler RSS Reader is an ideal Google Reader client. No 3G and no Wi-Fi? You can still read all feeds cached by Feeddler. With Feeddler Pro, you can also sync all of your RSS subscriptions at once whenever you have internet access.

Features:
* Supports Google Reader.
* Supports unread item filtering.
* Supports sorting by newest first, or oldest first.
* Caches up to 100 RSS articles for each feed.
* Able to star/unstar, like/unlike, share/unshare, mark unread any RSS story, even when offline (will sync when starting app with internet connection).
* Able to mark all items read for any RSS subscription.
* Supports Facebook sharing.
* Supports in-app e-mail sharing.
* Copy&Paste titles, links, or full articles.
* Uses built-in browser for full articles and web pages.
* Able to open full articles in Safari.
* Supports swiping gestures to navigate RSS stories. (iPad only)
*** "View all in folder" will be back in the next update.

More features in Pro version:
+ Supports sync all subscriptions, and sync subscriptions in a folder/tag.
+ Customizable batch syncing: sync all feeds or unread items only, sync from last sync, days or weeks. For faster syncing, we suggest "Unread only" + "FromLastSync."
+ More Mark All as Read options based on time.
+ Supports Twitter with automatic URL shortening using Bit.ly.
+ Supports Instapaper.
+ Supports Read It Later.
+ Supports pinching to zoom RSS stories. (iPad only)
+ Supports two-finger tapping on images to save to iPad Photos. (iPad only)

Here are a few of the things I like about Feeddler (please note I’m using the Pro version):

The look and feel of the app do a very good job of mimicking Google Reader in a browser.  For some, this may be unappealing, but I’m a big user of GReader on my Mac and I like the basic layout and feel of it – perhaps more just out of ‘devil I know’.  As you can see in the screencap at the top of the page, the Folder List layout is virtually identical to GReader in a browser.

An easy top bar button to apply a filter and see only Unread items, or see all; and also to choose to sort by oldest or newest articles

Lots of nice Google Reader specific options available via a nice little ‘G’ button at bottom right:

And a good range of general sharing options

Solid and relatively fast manual sync

A good set of options under ‘Mark As Read’ within individual feeds – so you can mark all as read, or just those that are older than X amount of time.  Very handy if you’ve got behind on your reading and just want to filter down to the latest items while catching up

Feeddler

Feeddler is even more impressive on the iPad – but so far it looks very good on the iPhone too. It may well be my favorite RSS app on both devices very soon.

You can find the Pro and Standard versions of Feeddler RSS Reader in the App Store now – priced at $4.99 and free respectively.

If you’ve tried out Feeddler on the iPhone, please share your thoughts on it in the comments.
