Apple to Release Official Retail Store Application for iOS Devices?

MacRumors is reporting that Apple may be planning to soon (as early as today) introduce a new application for iOS devices that will allow customers to access Apple’s online store as well as the ability to schedule Genius Bar appointments at Apple’s retail stores.

As the report points out, we’ve heard rumblings of just such an app since late last year. However, they also go on to state that a customer emailed Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking wether their would be an iPhone optimized version of Apple’s website on the horizon. Jobs simply replied, “Coming Soon.”

I don’t know a thing about application development, but wouldn’t have been just as easy to launch an iOS optimized HTML5 website instead of building a custom, native, iOS application?
