iPhone 4 pre-order blues

The new iPhone 4 is now available for pre-order.  I was not awake at the time Apple finished updating its online store, so I decided to try my luck later on in the day.

I first tried Apple’s Online store, but had no luck: the store was so bogged down by all of the pre-ordering that it said I would have to go see the Apple Store in person if I wanted to pre-order.  After that I tried AT&T’s site, and they said the same thing, and that their system was down. So then I decided to go to the actual AT&T store that way I wouldn’t miss out on the iPhone 4 pre-ordering.

When I got to the store I asked to pre-order the iPhone 4.  They saw me within 5 minutes of waiting, and the process itself was very smooth.  They told me they were supposed to go over some ground rules which included that the iPhone 4 16GB version was back-ordered. Also, that the white version of both iPhone 4’s was not going to be available until the first day of Fall “late Summer 2010.”  This didn’t bother me, because I think white on the iPhone is ugly, and I really want a 32GB version.

One piece of news that might be of use is that when pre-ordering, though: they did not ask me for the address that I wanted to send to.  Hopefully anyone pre-ordering will be prompted to state the shipping address (I wasn’t, which I found disappointing).  So I now have to pick up the iPhone 4 at the AT&T store, instead of it being delivered straight to my door.

The reason for this?  The system assumed that my billing address was my shipping address, and since my billing address is a P.O. Box, Fed-Ex will not deliver it there.  By default, the system made the shipping address the AT&T store, and it was too late to change the shipping address (believe me, I tried).  So, if you want it truly delivered to your house, be sure to tell the clerk that the shipping address is NOT a P.O. Box.

Did anyone else pre-order an iPhone 4 today? If so, where did you order from, and how was the experience?
