MacRumors is reporting that the iPhone 4 will have 512MB of RAM. That is of course, double the RAM in the third generation iPod touch, the iPhone 3GS, and even the iPad. The original, and 3G iPhones had only 128MB of RAM, which is why they will not be getting the multitasking functionality in the iOS 4 update. As far as I can tell, there is no reason iOS 4 shouldn’t run on the original iPhone, Apple is just artificially outdating the device.
What strikes me as odd regarding this news is the fact that Apple kept 256MB of RAM in the iPad, yet they bumped to 512MB in the new iPhone. One would think they would have included the RAM increase in the iPad. This shouldn’t be a big deal for customers, or for that matter, developers.
I smell built-in obsolescence.
