Confirmed: FaceTime Video Calls Will Not Use Cellular Minutes

Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that FaceTalk, Apple’s video calling feature in iPhone 4, will not use cellular minutes as many previously thought. The reason for the confusion seems to stem from the fact that to initiate a video call you must first make a phone call to someone. Many users thought that the voice call continues in the background once the video chat has started. It does not.

“The voice call ends as soon as the FaceTime call connects,” Apple tells us. “The FaceTime call is over Wi-Fi so does not use carrier minutes.”

During the WWDC keynote where the iPhone 4 was unveiled, Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated that FaceTime will remain Wi-Fi only throughout the rest of 2010.
