I agree it was an epic fail… I was in line at 3:30 am on launch day to buy 2 phones. By 8:30 I was sitting in the apple store with a 16gb and a 32 gb in front of me… My fiancé's phone was upgraded without issue, but mine was a different story… You see, Apple refuses to do upgrades for customers on large corporate plans with AT&T… What that means is after a 6 hour wait, I still end up having to wait until Tuesday to get my phone… No one involved in the situation was appologetic and somehow expected me to know that they wouldn't be able to upgrade a phone for a customer with over 500 devices on a corp plan with AT&T… Strike one against them… We have plenty of money to go elsewhere….

Just to contribute: I drove past my local AT&T store on my way home from work at around 6:20am EST, the lights were on (this is different from normal), but there are no people visible inside the store. There are also no cars in the parking lot, which surprises me, as I would figure even in Charleston, SC, there have to be phone junkies. I did not drive up to the building, so there may have been a sign posted saying don't bother. The second possibility is that the AT&T I am referring to is across the parking lot from Wal-mart. Maybe that's where everyone is (and it's a 24 hour Wal-mart). The Apple store nearest me is in downtown Charleston. I hate trying to go downtown because parking sucks. I would imagine that there IS a large contingent of patrons waiting to get their new iPhone. I'll wait (mostly cause I am financially challenged at the moment. ). Good luck on getting your phone and the number shuffle. I'm surprised that AT&T doesn't charge extra to swap the numbers.

Dito here for Australia as with Canada. We have a choice of Telstra, Optus and Vodafone as well as any of their resellers. We do have occasional issues but they seem to pale into insignacance when compared to the problems you guys have. Coverage is great, dropouts are negligable (effectively non-existant with Telstra) and service is overall average to excellent.

Also most of the time things such as number transfers and handovers are just routine jobs.

You already have the new phone? Mine comes in the mail tomorrow and I’m dying to know how much better the camera is. I’m getting married in April 2011, and I am going to be using a new app, the MyRegistry.com Universal Wishlist with Barcode Scanner app, to create my wedding registry….and the camera is going to be scanning my gift items to my wedding registry. The new higher pixel camera is so important to me because of this!

Step 1) Go to closest AT&T Corporate store (since they won’t be selling any till the 29th) and get a MicroSIM for yourself and a regular SIM for the handme down iPhone.
Step 2) Buy iPhone 4 (doesn’t matter what happens because you have a regular SIM and micro from before)
Step 3) Call ATT Customer Care get SIMs activated on correct number and enjoy not having to go anywhere else

I already got my MicroSIM in advance from my AT&T store in case they ran low (when I changed one for my iPad they only had a few).

It seems that AT&T (at customer service/retail level) gets kept in the dark from all this Apple stuff so I dunno who really is to blame.

In reply to Dangersnert. I can see that there have been some big advantages to being with AT&T for Apple - but the argument for remaining exclusive with them now seems very weak.

So glad to be in Canada and have three different networks to chose from, this AT&T sounds like a nightmare to deal with. I don't really care about having to wait an extra month just like to Ipad once I got it the jailbreak was already to go and most issues were resolved 🙂 Which will be the case with the Iphone 4 plus it'll be factory unlocked.

Why is Apple sticking with AT&T??? They must be throwing a ton of cash Apples way to put up with all this crap.

well. i'm using my new iphone 4 right now but that's not to say it was an arduous task pre-ordering. This ordeal will definitely push more people to Verizon in a few years.
