Steve Jobs Answers Why iOS4 on iPhone 3G Does Not Support Custom Wallpapers

Many are complaining that iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G does not support many of the features, such as multitasking and Bluetooth keyboard support, as a reason for upgrading to the new OS. Another feature absent from iOS 4 on iPhone 3G, is the ability to setup custom wallpapers on the devices’s app screens.

Most of these limitations are a direct result of fewer hardware resources in the device, specifically RAM. Anyway, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has responded to a customer’s email inquiring about the omission. Jobs states that poor performance was the reason for the omission.

The icon animation with backgrounds didn’t perform well enough.

Worth noting, is the fact that wallpapers have been available on Jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches nearly since the beginning. Make of this response what you will.
