Apple's Much Rumored 'Marble' Project Is Xcode 4?

The much rumored “Marble” project may actually be Xcode 4, and not a UI redesign in Mac OS X, as previously believed. You may remember, for the longest time, many believed “Marble” would bring a darker, less glossy look to OS X and replace the current, aging, “Aqua” UI that has been in place for a decade. It was expected this UI enhancement would show up with the release of 10.6 Snow Leopard. It did not, and is now expected to be included in Mac OS X 10.7.

However, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber is now claiming that the “Marble” project we’ve been hearing about is not a UI redesign for OS X, but instead Xcode 4, which a beta was released to developers under a non-disclosure agreement. The few tidbits that have leaked about Xcode 4 indicate that the development environment will have Interface Builder baked right in, instead of a separate app as it is now.

Xcode 4 is still in beta, Apple doesn’t have screenshots available, and what was shown at WWDC 2010 is covered by NDA. But if you have a developer account, you can get a tour of the new interface by watching the Developer Tools State of the Union session. It is, to say the least, a major overhaul – primarily focused on doing more within a single window, even going so far as to bake Interface Builder into Xcode itself. According to several informed sources at WWDC, that’s the “Marble” project.

So, no one knows when either Xcode 4 or Mac OS X 10.7 will show up. This recent development has done nothing more than muddy the waters. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
