iPhone 4 antenna problem video

The folks at Insanely Great Mac have done a very good video demo of the iPhone 4 antenna problem that is being widely reported all over the web.  They make several test calls between an iPhone 3GS and a new iPhone 4, and show how the calls fail when the iPhone 4 is cradled in the left hand in a way that covers the black strip at the bottom left of the phone ‘s frame.

I wasn ‘t able to embed the video “ so click the image above “ or HERE “ to give it a look.

There is a ton of discussion of this issue going on.  It seems the issue is not impacting everyone with an iPhone 4 and is possibly an intermittent one that is affected by the area you ‘re in and the reception / coverage available.

A few of us at JAiB who have got the iPhone 4 have been talking a little about this via email today.  Our experience has varied.  Brandon K has not seen the issue as yet.  Michael L has been able to reproduce it.  Frank and I both have as well, but with less severity “ as in, we ‘ve both seen the signal bars gradually disappear when held in the left hand, but calls have not failed or dropped for us.

Frank also notes that he sees the issue on an iPhone 3GS as well and that iOS 4 may be part of the equation

I performed a test with my wife’s 3GS running iOS4.  Sure enough if I hold it the same way, left hand covering the bottom of the phone the bars decrease.  It’s the exact same issue with the new iPhone.  The bars did take a second or two more to go down but they did decrease in the same exact way.  Now this is why I’m leaning towards it being a small iOS4 issue??? Time will tell I guess…

For those of you who have managed to get an iPhone 4, what ‘s your experience?  Are you seeing this problem at all?  If so, all the time, or only in certain areas?
