There are a few little problems with the flipSYNC’s design, but none of them overshadow how well this compact iPhone cable works when you need it to.
The flipSYNC isn ‘t designed to be your primary sync cable, but it ‘ll work in a jiffy. To unravel the whole section of cable, you start by pulling the male 30-pin port out all the way, and then follow up with the male USB port. You won ‘t be able to open the flipSYNC up any other way, and there ‘s actually a sticker dedicated to informing you of this. Once open, the whole length of cable between the two ports spans approximately two inches.
The flipSYNC designed to be stowed in a pocket or placed in a key ring or keychain, but whether or not you use choose to try the latter depends on how many little gadgets you already have on you. I ‘ve already got a little flashlight and Leatherman Micra on mine, so I found the flipSYNC to be a pretty tight fit.
That ‘s not to say that the flipSYNC isn ‘t small ” it is. The whole package is extremely light, but it does have an unusual shape, so it probably warrants its very own keyring within your main keyring, so that you can gain a little bit of distance from your keys. The flipSYNC will need a bit of space to work well, especially if you ‘re going to use it as a sync cable and attach it to a laptop or USB hub.
The only strange thing about the flipSYNC is the orientation of its ports.
Most of the PC laptops I know have USB ports on both the left and right side. MacBooks of the none Air variety, however, only have USB ports on the left. Given the nature of the flipSYNC’s cable (flexible, but not really twistable), this means that plugging the iphone in on the left side of a laptop (again, MacBooks only have USB on the left) will end up with the screen face up, but the home button away from you.
In other words, if a text comes in while you ‘re syncing in this orientation, you ‘ll be reading it upside down. I think the flipSYNC design would have been a lot better if it was optimized to stay on the left side of a laptop, instead of the right.
In the grand scheme of things, however, this probably won ‘t rattle too many users. The flipSYNC is a very short cable, so it ‘s not convenient to use in everyday settings at your work desk. However, if you ‘d like to simply tether the iPhone to your computer in a coffee shop, then the flipSYNC is simple to set up, and so small you won’t even notice it in your bag. It ‘s the best looking and most practical mini cable I ‘ve used, and I vastly prefer it to using the default white iPhone cable when on-the-go.
