It appears that some iPhone 4 users located throughout the United States have been experiencing slower than average upload speeds on AT&T’s 3G network. In many areas the upload speed seemed limited to 200kbps, and it was unclear whether it was a cap placed on upload speeds intentionally by AT&T or if it was some other cause.
AT&T has responded with a statement acknowledging the problem. Claiming it is a software defect in Alcatel-Lucent equipment, it does appear that a software fix is in the works.
AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent jointly identified a software defect – triggered under certain conditions – that impacted uplink performance for Laptop Connect and smartphone customers using 3G HSUPA-capable wireless devices in markets with Alcatel-Lucent equipment. This impacts less than two percent of our wireless customer base. While Alcatel-Lucent develops the appropriate software fix, we are providing normal 3G uplink speeds and consistent performance for affected customers with HSUPA-capable devices.
AT&T sets no timeframe that customers can expect relief, likely because they don’t know what they are doing.
