Consumer Reports No Longer Recommends iPhone 4, Signal Issues to Blame

Consumer Reports recently stated that the iPhone 4’s signal issues weren’t enough to sway most users from buying the device. They have since pulled an about face, and no longer recommend the device. Why the change? Their engineers have had time to analyze the problem and Consumer Reports now feels that the issue is more than sporadic one, and is instead due to a hardware problem.

So, again, Consumer Reports is now reporting, along with their other smartphone ratings, that they cannot recommend iPhone 4 due to the antenna issue.

It’s official. Consumer Reports’ engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone’s lower left side — an easy thing, especially for lefties — the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you’re in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can’t recommend the iPhone 4.

Consumer Reports tested iPhone 4 agains other comparable smartphones, including iPhone 3GS, and did not experience the same level of signal loss as they did with the iPhone 4. So, Apple can claim that it was a signal indicator issue, but the rest of us know that it’s an antenna issue.
