JAiB reviews WOODi: a dock for your iPhone

Have you ever taken a look at your phone lying on your nightstand while it ‘s charging and thought:  ‘This just isn ‘t right.  I have this brand new, expensive phone, and it ‘s just lying here flat on its back? ‘  Sure, you could purchase the Apple dock, or any of the number of similar products on the market.  But does a white plastic square really do your new toy any justice?

The folks over at LilSticks don ‘t think so.  So they did something about it.

Behold WOODi, a dock built from reclaimed wood for your iPhone or iPod.  When you first get your hands on one of these things, what will first grab your attention is the smell.  And I mean that in a good way.  You can smell that thing is made from real wood.  Think of it as a head ‘s up that you ‘re receiving a quality product.

Each unit is, essentially, a dock.  The connector and power cable are built right into the product.  When I first plugged mine in and docked my iPhone, I thought it looked really nice on my wood-like nightstand.  Given that there is no groove where the unit docks, it isn ‘t a snug fit.  It wiggles back-and-forth and side-to-side quite easily.  But that doesn ‘t mean the phone doesn ‘t sit securely, because it does.  But do note that how it fits in the dock is different than the standard grooved Apple dock.

My particular model also featured a slotted groove where you could lay your iPhone on its side for easy video viewing.  However, this was designed with an iPhone 3GS in mind, not my iPhone 4, which was too thin to lay in the groove.  Still, it ‘s a nice feature if you ‘re able to utilize it.  The developer did inform me that he will be working on an iPhone 4 model in the near future.

On the bottom of the unit, there are three different slits where you can insert the cord to keep it out of view as much as possible.  This is a most-welcomed addition as hiding the cable lets the unit shine on its own without the cable getting in its way.

The unit I received did feature a small imperfection:  the dock connector was slightly crooked – and I do mean slightly, to the point where you can barely notice.  The designer insisted that no sold units would ever ship in this case, and that the only reason he shipped it to me that way was so that I could review it faster.  Still, I felt like I should mention it.

It ‘s hard to look at this product and not come away impressed.  Even if you decide it ‘s not your cup of tea, you have to respect the attention to detail that was paid in putting this unit together.

In the end, what WOODi really is is a dock for your iPhone or iPod.  If you ‘re in the market for a dock, I would definitely recommend considering this product.  Yes, you can find cheaper docks out on the market.  But you will find few, if any, that are this high quality.  Plus, the price difference isn ‘t so great that it will break your bank.
