Microsoft Executive Says "iPhone 4 Might Be Their Vista"

Computerworld is reporting that Microsoft’s Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner has compared Apple’s iPhone 4 to Microsoft’s abysmal failure of an operating system -Windows Vista. That is to say, both are critical and commercial failures.

“It looks like the iPhone 4 might be their Vista, and I’m okay with that,” said Kevin Turner, Microsoft’s chief operating officer, in a keynote speech at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC), which runs through Thursday in Washington, D.C.

Turner then makes a snarky comment about the iPhone 4’s looming reception problems, while promoting Microsoft’s vaporware Windows Phone 7 Operating System.

“One of the things I want to make sure you know today is that you’re going to be able to use a Windows Phone 7 and not have to worry about how you’re holding it to make a phone call,” Turner said, referring to the Microsoft mobile operating system set to debut on smartphones this fall.

This might just be the dumbest thing I’ve heard from a Microsoft executive yet, regarding the iPhone, and that’s even taking into account Ballmer’s infamous statement when the iPhone was first introduced in 2007. First off, Microsoft’s share of the smartphone market is pathetic. The company’s recent KIN initiative was another failure, and Windows Phone 7 is still vaporware that will only compete with the iPhone of 2008 and not the iPhone of 2010 if and when it ships.

Besides, if Microsoft is comparing the iPhone 4 to Vista, they would either be saying that Vista was a runaway success selling nearly 2 million units on launch weekend, or that iPhone 4 was a total dud. Neither of which are true, just look up the numbers.

Yes, the iPhone 4 appears to have antenna problems and an even bigger PR problem, but for Microsoft to hand out criticism of Apple’s superb success in the mobile phone market is downright laughable, especially considering Microsoft has been struggling to gain market share the entire time they have been competing in this mobile arena.
