Apple is going to be providing free cases to all iPhone 4 owners who want one, as part of their response to the iPhone 4 antenna issues.  This was announced yesterday at their iPhone 4 press conference to address the issue.

They also stated that they cannot make the new Apple ‘bumpers ‘ fast enough to provide one for each iPhone 4 user “ so they ‘ll be sourcing some alternatives (as yet unspecified), and letting users choose a case to have shipped to them.  Users can start applying for these via the Apple web site starting late next week.

Apple is also offering a refund to any users that already bought a bumper case from them.

During the press conference, Steve Jobs lead off by saying that Apple are not perfect, and neither are smartphones.  Towards the end of the event, Jobs stressed that though Apple are not perfect they love their users

So we do all this because we love our users. And when we fall short ” which we do sometimes ” we try harder. We pick ourselves up, we figure out what ‘s wrong, and we try harder. And when we succeed, they reward us by staying our users, and that makes it all worth it. ‘

I enjoy the naked iPhone as much as the next guy, but I ‘ve always used a case on every one of mine since the first gen “ so the idea that a case is needed in order to minimize the chances of seeing the antenna issue is no big deal for me (though I can see how others might not be so keen).

Apple has added an Antenna section to their website “ which offers information on smartphone antenna performance.  You can check that out here:
