Cult of Mac is reporting that the iPhone will be on T-Mobile’s U.S. network sometime this quarter (which ends in September). This information comes from a “highly placed source” at T-Mobile.
Talks between Apple and T-Mobile are at an advanced stage, our source says, and it’s 80 percent likely that the iPhone will be coming to T-Mobile in Q3.
The source works at T-Mobile but asked not to be quoted directly and to remain anonymous because they aren’t authorized to talk to the press.
The report points out that the current iPhone 4 hardware may or may not be compatible with T-Mobile’s network even though it utilizes the same UMTS technology that AT&T (and Apple’s other international carriers) utilize.
What’s the problem you ask? Well, T-Mobile’s network operates at a 1700MHz frequency, which is currently not officially supported with the iPhone. That said, Apple could simply be withholding this information, and the device already supports the frequency.
As I’ve said before, this seems like a more logical move than Verizon. However, Verizon does have a larger network than T-Mobile in the U.S. Also, the timeframe seems a little off to me. There isn’t much time for Apple to make these new devices, especially when they can’t keep up with current demand, that is, if they are just starting production now. The other possibility is of course, the current hardware already out there has the capability to function at the 1700MHz frequency.
