With shipping dates for Apple’s Free Case program now bleeding into October but “antenna-gate” issues not going anywhere soon, I’m willing to bet that some people are considering other potential cases.
Case-Mate has launched a full array of cases that run the gamut from thin and stylish (but potentially not very protective) to something bulkier and more crash-resistant but thankfully with a little bit of flair. Here are a few that seem the most intriguing to me:
THE TORQUE
$24.99
I find most “armor-style” cases rather unpleasant to look at. And when I witness someone using one of these militaristic monstrosities it tends to look like they’re talking into an armadillo. But the Torque case, made from double-injection silicone mold, at least gives the overall phone a splash of color which softens the entire look of the case nicely. (As far as the tire pattern goes, I have mixed feelings — it’s dynamic and clever, sure, but the last thing I want to associate my brand new iPhone with is being run over by a car)
THE TOUGH CASE
$34.99
Here’s an intriguing concept for the incessant phone-dropper: a case that goes on in two separate layers — a silicon skin on the inside for shock absorption, and a plastic outer shell for a smoother, easier trip in and out of pockets. I imagine the one drawback is, once the phone is packed in, it’s double the work to get it out.
THE MEDLEY
$34.99
The Medley looks to be Case-Mate’s best “compromise” case — offering fairly sturdy protection with a blend of TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethanes) and Polycarbonate materials but giving the owner an aesthetically pleasant design (if you’re into purple, pink, white or black, that is)
THE ID CREDIT CARD CASE
$34.99
For those of you who are serious, serious multi-taskers, as in “I want my phone to do everything for me, including pay for my lunch” this may be the solution for you. A thin-style protective case with a slot in the back for two IDs and/or credit cards. Not the ideal phone case for everyone, but for those of you looking to slim down your bulging wallets (or perhaps for distance runners looking to travel lightly) this could be a great solution. The one drawback that comes to mind? You lose your phone and suddenly you’ve lost your credit cards too.
