Guess what? Apple just announced via their Mexican site (in Spanish, of course) that the iPhone 4 is soon going to be released in Mexico. Unlocked. Whoa.
Formerly, iPhones where only available through Mexican carrier Telcel, whose exclusivity deal seems to have come to an end. The implications go far beyond the geek community, as Telcel’s owner (Carlos Slim, currently the wealthiest person in the world) holds some significant percentage of Apple’s stocks.
But, hey… this is not Just Another Economics Blog. Prices have not yet been announced, but right now the unlocked 3GS is about $630 dollars on Apple’s site, and some imported iPhone 4 units are being offered at $1,000 dollars on eBay-like sites. Obviously, getting it with a Telcel contract should considerably drop the price.
