I’m going to state the obvious: Man, there are a lot of to-do apps for the iPhone. I guess that’s because each and every person has their own concept of what it means to be organized. Frankly, as much as I love using my iPhone and it’s many productivity apps, I’ve never gotten into the habit of using it for to-do lists. When I go to the grocery store my first instinct is still to just scrawl down a list of items I want to buy on the back of an old envelope.
Now, aside from standard task managing app functions like categories, due date notifications, and prioritization, Task Aware does bring one key new feature to the table: the ability to notify you when you’re in the general vicinity of an errand that needs to be completed
So if you’ve been forgetting to pick up your dry cleaning for weeks now (I’m not sure why “picking up dry cleaning” is always the go-to errand for to-do app descriptions — are iPhone users dropping off that much dry cleaning?) Task Aware will notify you when you’re in “the vicinity.” I use the term “vicinity” in quotes because it’s not quite clear to me what distance triggers an alert — I’m guessing somewhere between one and two miles. Unfortunately, there is no way to customize this distance — and if you’re like me and live, work, and run errands in a relatively small location radius TaskAware is going to notify you all too often.
I imagine the fact that Task Aware uses the less-accurate cellular triangulation as opposed to GPS (in order to save battery life) is the reason it’s unable to customize or be more pin-point accurate in terms of it’s proximity alerts. But still, if Task Aware somehow allowed for an alert when I’m within, say, 1/8 of a mile of a task location then this promising task management app would have completely won me over.
As it stands, however, if you’re a long-to-medium distance commuter, and a forgetful one at that, Task Aware may just be the perfect to-do app for you.
Task Aware is available at the iPhone app store for $2.99 until August 3rd. Then, I believe, it’s price will jump back up to $4.99.
