Apple Rockets to Third Place Amongst Portable Computer Manufactures With the Help of iPad

Fortune is reporting on a report put together by Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank, demonstrating that if the iPad is categorized as a portable computer (is there any doubt that it is a computer?) alongside netbooks and notebook, Apple suddenly holds third place in world wide computer sales in Q2 of 2010. They are only behind HP and Lenovo.

The jump comes from excellent growth in the company’s traditional laptop computers along with an excellent iPad launch quarter.

“When including the iPad as part of the NB [notebook] market,” he writes, “Apple leapt over Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell in terms of global unit share.”

Viewed this way, Apple goes from being No. 7 in the worldwide portable computer market to No. 3, after only Hewlett Packard (HPQ) and Acer. And it’s not stopping there, says Whitmore.

According to Whitmore, the iPad cannibalized netbook and low-cost notebook PCs. He also believes more and more analysts will continue to include the iPad in their portable computer research numbers.
