How the iPhone 4 Launch went in Europe

Just a quick update on how the iPhone 4 launch went in Europe.

Last Friday, July 30th,  the iPhone was launched in:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

In most of these countries, stock ran out before the end of the day and if you didn’t pre-sign with a carrier, you’ll probably have to practice patience.  T-Mobile, for example, stopped taking pre-orders after just one day due to an overwhelming number of inquiries (just like in Austria).

In Belgium, the lines were longer than most expected. Mobistar doesn’t want to confirm the iPhone 4 has completely sold out, but promises new iPhones before the end of next week. The carrier is also reluctant to make any estimation as to how many iPhone 4’s were actually sold over the last few days.

In Ireland, O2 say they are restricting iPhone 4 sales to existing customers for the initial launch period, as stocks were expected to be limited. In Ireland, customers are not depending on O2 alone, since there are three providers selling the iPhone 4: O2, Vodafone and Three Ireland. Irish customers can also buy it directly from the Apple store, SIM-free, and choose their own network.

In the Netherlands you probably won’t be able to get one for about 8 to 10 weeks if you were not among the “lucky-ones” who pre-ordered while it was still possible! Dutch iPhone addicts that didn ‘t want to wait have taken to booking a Ryanair or Easyjet ticket to London and reserving an iPhone in an Apple Store (often using a fake UK address they Googled) and picking it up during the weekend.

Purchasing an iPhone 4 in The Netherlands without committing to T-Mobile as your carrier and without paying more than 800 Euros a piece (prices above 1000 Euros were not an exception) has been an adventure in the past and will continue to be one in the future. That’s because Apple has continued the agreement for T-Mobile to be the sole carrier again for the iPhone 4 and not everyone seems to be happy with this decision!
