MacRumors is reporting that the iOS 4.1 Beta 3, that was released to developers last week, contains a new feature in the iOS “Contacts” application that would allow users to place FaceTime calls with wither a phone number (if the other user has an iPhone 4) or with an email address. If this were set into place, it would allow FaceTime camera equipped devices such as iPod touches and iPads, to connect to one another without the need of a cellular network to first place a call.
This, along with other reports we’ve been hearing lately, strongly suggests that Apple is going to unveil a FaceTime equipped iPod touch in the coming months. It would also make sense for Apple to add a front facing camera to the iPad, but little evidence has surfaced to support this line of thought.
We have heard reports of email-based FaceTime support before, when an image surfaced similar to the one above, last month.
