DigiTimes has once again accumulated several rumors they’ve been hearing regarding Apple’s iOS platform, and have compiled a list.
-iPad: First off, DigiTimes is claiming that Apple will release a new version of the iPad in Q1 of 2011, armed with an ARM Cortex-A9 processor design. This is an bump up from Apple’s current A4 chip which uses the Cortex-A8 design. They also claim that the iPad will receive a RAM bump to 512MB from 256MB, bringing it in line with iPhone 4.
Lastly in regards to the iPad, they are claiming once again that Apple will be pushing out a 7-inch version of the iPad. This smaller iPad would retain the 1024X768 resolution that the 9.7-inch iPad currently supports, but as you can guess, the same number of pixels in a smaller area means a higher pixel density. Higher pixel density means a sharper image.
-CDMA iPhone: DigiTimes is claiming that Pegatron has been tapped to begin production of a CDMA-capable iPhone 4, and the device would be introduced at CES in January, and presumably shipping later that month. The CDMA iPhone would operate on Verizon’s network in the U.S. and China Telecom’s in China. They also claim that the new model will have a metal back instead of the current glass backing as part of the “integrated antenna.”
-Apple TV: The report claims that Apple is planning to introduce a new Apple TV based on AMD’s Fusion processor platform. The device would not have an internal hard drive, but would instead stream content from the cloud. Also, the new Apple TV would be based on iOS and feature a very similar UI that we see on other iOS devices. Lastly, the new Apple TV would include support for “social networking websites, network multimedia and the App Store.”
I still maintain that a smaller iPad is not in the works, possibly a bigger one, but a smaller one makes no sense. The CDMA iPhone seems likely, but I can guarantee there will be little if any visible changes to the iPhone 4 design, even if it is on another carrier. I know for damn sure that Apple will not introduce the device at CES. The new Apple TV sounds just like something Apple would put out. Perhaps minus the social media and app stuff, but otherwise it would be an excellent upgrade to the languishing Apple TV.
