How much would you pay for the iPhone 4?

Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes. None of us are the same. We all choose to blow our hard-earned cash according to strict personal preference. Some smoke, some don ‘t. Some ski, some don ‘t. Some are willing to pay EUR 1000 or more for an iPhone 4, and some just aren ‘t. In which category are you?

Of course, whether you consider spending over EUR 1000 depends on your level of want (or should I say desperation?) to own the latest iPhone model, that made its debut on 24 June 2010 in select countries, then on 29 July 2010 in 17 more.

Me? I understand the want but not the desperation. Austria is not one of the European countries where the iPhone is sold contract-free so we have to make friends with one of 2 providers, T-mobile or Orange. Both companies bind you to 24 month contracts and in exchange dangle the iPhone 4 in front of your face for a reduced fee. Having now gotten mine for EUR 150 + 24 months of more T-mobile, I was curious to see if I could get one for my husband, who is not up for prolonging his contract yet, and he ‘s thus not yet eligible.

Since iPhone 4 is practically sold out here or at least not available for several weeks, there are a few avenues left to explore.

Buying via the UK or the US is possible. But involve either travel or connections. Besides, there are people who have done this for you. And are now charging from EUR 700, EUR 800, up to EUR 1300 on ebay for a unit.

Then there is geizhals.at, a site that lists the cheapest places to buy electronics on the web or in traditional shops. A friend of mine decided on a whim to buy an iPhone 4 on Saturday, called one of the listed places up, then found and bought one for EUR 1000. Instant gratification. I ‘m still shaking my head in disbelief that people are willing to pay that much. I know I wouldn ‘t. But that ‘s just me.

Indeed, looking through the list, the price range is quite dramatic. Yes, you could probably walk right now into a shop somewhere in Vienna, splash down EUR 1400 and walk out with an unlocked iPhone 4. But would you?
