A new add-on came out this past weekend, and it looks like it’ll be a real time save for jailbroken 3GS users (I’m not mentioning the iPhone 4, since I’m assuming it’s got buttloads of RAM to spare). The add-on, called “Remove Background SBSettings”, is activated like any other button within SBSettings.
Unlike the other buttons in SBSettings, however, Remove Background isn’t a toggle — it’s more of a big red button that nukes everything stored in RAM. It works instantly, and is a lot faster than forcing a respring, closing apps manually through the iOS multitasking bar, or using the SBSettings Processes tab.
Using this big red button usually leaves me with about 144 MB of RAM free. It won’t close any app in the foreground, but it will kill any active background activities, such as GPS, VOiP, or the iPod.app.
If you like nuking RAM, just search for “Remove Background Settings” in Cydia.
