Have you tried turning on Summerboard in the Winterboard settings? Also try "Optimize Themes"… This will tweak the image(.png) files within the "Themes" folder… making them smaller and load faster… Benefits= more free Ram and faster app launching/ switching.

Step 1 run this. Step 2 run my app. Step 3 monitor how much ram has changed. There is probably a smarter way to do this, but I am learning all this from scratch and getting it via piecemeal.

That's a very good question, but I don't think it should. If anything, you can just try it out and respring if it does kill Winterboard. No harm done.
