Apple Already Field Testing New iPhone and iPad Models?

Boy Genius Report is claiming that one of their sources has found code in iOS 4 that shows new iPhone and iPad models may already be in the midst of field testing, or at least preparing to be. The code in question has device designations of iPhone3,2, iPhone3,3, and iProd2,1, and allows the devices to “auto-activate”, which allows carriers to test devices without the traditional retail setup process.

Way down deep within iOS 4 is a pretty intriguing block of code. Our source says that the code queries the device, and if the device is either a CDMA iPhone or iPad 2, the device will auto-activate, thus bypassing the need for iTunes. We’re told this block of code has appeared every year consecutively before a major iPhone / device release, removed right before launch.

We’ve seen these device names before in iPhone OS 3.2 which was released on the iPad. That said, these device names tend to appear fairly early on in the design process. Case and point: the name iPhone3,1 first appeared in iPhone OS code in March of 2009. iPhone3,1 became known as the iPhone 4 and was not released for another 15 months.

Now, the iPhone 3,2 and iPhone3,3 found in this chunk of code suggests that this will be only minor hardware tweaks (presumably, the much rumored CDMA iPhone) instead of a full-fledged update. Why you ask? Well, based on previous numbering schemes, the next iPhone should carry the device designation number of iPhone4,1, which of course, none of these do. Also, the current iPad model is known as iProd0,1, so the “iProd2,1” should be the next iPad model.
