Welcome to the Apocalypse. Or something. Who cares. This game has zombies and bullets and bombs and zapper things, and that’s really all that matters. Ok, well entertaining gameplay also matters, but for now let’s focus on the one thing the App Store seems to have not enough of… zombie games! (Hint of sarcasm).
Right, so the App Store has more than its fair share of zombie themed everything, but there are some diamonds out there if you’re willing to spend the time digging through the proverbial garbage. Zombie Escape by Viqua Games and released by Chillingo just might be one of the ones worth dumpster diving for. Click on through for some thoughts, screenshots and video.

First let’s talk graphics. As you can tell by the opening page there, this isn’t the “Tweetie” of zombie games. It’s not going to win any awards by a long shot. But, not always does that really matter.

Options… Check. Lot’s of options… uncheck. You have no idea how much I wish I could kill the lady who keeps screaming in this game. Matter of fact sometimes I’ve bombed her just to shut her up. (Note to dev: Lose the screaming chick. Or at least tone her down a bit).

Alright, let’s get to the meat of the thing (pun intended…). Line drawing games for some reason seem to call out to me from across the digital void. I’ve owned all kinds of them, including the classics like Flight Control and Harbor Master. But they all do pretty much the same thing, which is have you drag object “a” to object “b” while sometimes having to avoid other object “a”s or “c”s. There isn’t a whole heck of lot to write about when it comes to this type of game. Generally you deal with some level of increasing difficulty over time until you have so many things on the screen your brain just craps and can’t handle it anymore.

Well, Zombie Escape takes that concept of over action brain zapping and ups the brain fry an extra notch by throwing in… you guessed it – weapons. You’ve got all kinds of stuff at your disposal, like snipers, bombs and safe zones. But there’s a catch…

Every “day” there’s some new twist they throw at you. Some days you’re only going to have meat and bombs, other days you only have sleeping gas and some other thing. Talk about taking the simple concept of drag screaming chick to helicopter to escape zombie and making it a whole lot more involved.

Did I mention there’s upgrades to manage too? Guess not. Oh well. Never mind.

Conclusion:
I love me some line drawing action. Really do. I’ve had Flight Control since the first time I saw it, and I haven’t looked back since (its never left my phone). I’ve tried all kinds of line games, and tossed most of them away within minutes because the line control sucked or the game was slow, buggy, whatever. Zombie Escape doesn’t suck. It needs more levels. I bought the game yesterday, I’ve beaten it twice, spent entirely too much time in survival mode and just might beat it a third time tonight. Its fun, its challenging, and its a great price for a great little game. With a couple more levels & days it could well be a contender for best line drawing game around.

Disclaimer: I bought this with my own pennies. They didn’t pay me, I paid them and chose to write about this app because I like it. Oh, and you can buy it: Zombie Escape – Chillingo Ltd
