Review: Plates! for the iPhone

Kyle T. Webster Illustration, the makers of White Lines, have released yet another simple, yet addicting game:  Plates!  If you ‘re familiar with White Lines, then the style of gameplay will seem familiar to you.  It doesn ‘t take hours to learn or play.  Instead, it ‘s intended for those moments when you ‘re looking to burn a few minutes in the waiting room or while you ‘re on your lunch break from work.

Plates! is a fast-paced game where you have to use one of four different sauces to correctly dress plates on a conveyer belt.  Red (ketchup) goes with the hot dog, green (oil) goes on the salad, blue (syrup) goes on the pancake, and brown (steak sauce) goes on the steak.  Not only will the game make you hungry, but it ‘s also fun to play.

This isn ‘t a feature-rich game with a billion levels and several different options or difficulty settings.  There is just one game and one level.  The plates start out coming slowly at first, but gradually increase in speed as you progress.

Aside from the plates I described above, there are also combo plates that require two sauces (hot dog and salad or steak and salad), bombs disguised as hot dogs (don ‘t sauce these), and bonus plates that, when sauced, also sauce all other plates on the screen.

The controls are extremely simple.  Each of the four corners of the screen contain a sauce bottle.  Tap that bottle to select it, and then tap a plate to sauce it.  The bottle remains active until you tap another to switch it.  If you sauce three of the same foods in a row, you get triple points.

As for the graphics and sounds, they are what you would expect from this type of game.  They aren ‘t too over the top, nor do they leave you feeling underwhelmed.  The colors are vibrant enough to catch your eye, and the sound effects and ambience do add to the gameplay.

Really, that ‘s all there is to say about Plates!  In the ever-expanding App Store, it can sometimes be difficult to purchase a game, especially when there are several at the $0.99 price point.  While Plates! doesn ‘t necessarily stand head-and-shoulders above the rest, it does come from a developer who has proven himself to be reputable and capable of producing fun titles.  Plates! is definitely worth a shot.

Plates! is available now in the App Store for $0.99.
