At Apple’s music conference last Wednesday, among the release of iTunes 10, the new iPods and Apple TV was the announcement of iOS 4.1; the next update for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
As well as several bug fixes, including a fix for the proximity sensor glitch and iOS 4’s poor performance on the 3G, there are several new features that should get iPhone users very excited. Check out the Mactropolis guide after the break!
Game Centre
If you had the iOS 4.0 Beta on your iPhone before its official release, you’ll already be familiar with Game Centre. It’s Apple’s own social gaming service. It allows you to connect with people all over the world and challenge them in your favorite games. Either choose to play against a friend, or let Game Centre pair you up with someone else who’s of a similar gaming ability. You can also track achievements and compare your highest scores.
Ping
Apple’s own social network for music lets you follow your favorite artists and friends and discover what they’re listening, who their favorite artists are and what music events they’re going to. You may have already been using it in iTunes 10, but with 4.1 Ping is built in to the iTunes app so you can stay connected while you’re on the move.
HDR Photography
This is a big one and by far my favorite! When you take a picture with the Camera app on your iPhone 4, using high dynamic range (HDR) technology, your iPhone will capture three versions of your image; they are then blended together to create a photo with the right contrast, color, balance and sharpness. If you managed to catch the Apple music event, you’ll already know how amazing the results are.
HD Video Uploads
Both the iPhone 4 and the new iPod Touch are capable of shooting stunning high-definition videos. Now you can upload your HD home movies to YouTube and MobileMe right from your device without having to sync with your computer.
So that’s our quick guide. iOS 4.1 will be available for download this Wednesday through iTunes. Please let us know which feature you’re looking forward to most in the comments!
