Over 45 Million iPod Touches Sold To Date

Asymco, a market research firm, has release an estimate claiming that Apple has sold more than 45 million iPod touch units since the device’s introduction in fall of 2007. That makes up nearly 38% of the 120 million iOS devices Apple has sold.

We know that there were 59.6 million iPhones sold through June (from SEC filings)

We also know that 3.2 million iPads were sold.

If we assume about 8 million iPhones and 4 million iPads were sold during August and July, the total number of iPod touch sold is 45.2 million.

You have to remember that most of these estimates are based off of educated guesses, and the little bit of data that Apple will share with us in the from of “over” so many units sold. That said, these numbers do give us a glimpse into the success of Apple’s iOS devices. Apple has never released the sales numbers for the iPod touch, but instead they count it in with all of the other iPod models. Apple did mention that the iPod touch is now the most popular iPod line, last week.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. iOS is Apple’s new baby. It’s what will carry the company into the future, not the Mac.

Also worth noting is the fact that iOS wouldn’t be as big as it is without the iPod touch, and that’s why I think Apple has an edge over other mobile platforms. Say, if HP were to release an iPod touch-like device running WebOS, I could easily see them gaining market share, but for what ever reason, no one seems to be making iPod touch knockoffs even though iPad knockoffs are plenty.
