Apple has posted a Game Center overview page, and finally removes all doubt on what devices Game Center will run. The devices that can run Apple’s forthcoming gaming social network include: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-gen iPod touch models when iOS 4.1 ships. Notice that the original iPhone, and iPod touch are not included. Nor is iPhone 3G, even though it does support iOS 4.
Originally, Game Center was coming to all iOS 4 devices. That changed last month however, when Apple removed support for iPhone 3G and the second gen iPod touch in a seed issued last month.
Game Center, which was announced in April of this year, aims to bring more social aspects to gaming on iOS devices. The standard fare will be included: Leaderboards, friends, stats, and so on.
If I had to guess, Game Center was dropped from the iPhone 3G because of the poor iOS performance on the device. Game Center, which is coupled with iOS 4, surly wouldn’t help performance. Regardless, it’s an odd omission on Apple’s part.
