It turns out that the new iPod touch that has begun to land in stores, is only equipped with 256MB of RAM. Compare this to the iPhone 3GS and iPad, which also have 256MB of RAM, and you have nothing exciting. However, as some of you may remember, the iPhone 4 is equipped with 512MB of RAM. It was assumed (at least by me) that Apple would continue with an upward trend on RAM.
Kyle Wiens of iFixit:
The key marking of interest on the A4 processor package is K4X2G643GE. This is identical to the marking found on the iPad processor, but different from the iPhone 4 processor. The iPad has 256 MB RAM, while the iPhone 4 features 512 MB. Unfortunately, this means that like the iPad, the new iPod Touch includes only 256 MB of RAM.
It turns out there is a good reason Apple is skimping on RAM in their non-iPhone devices: The Price. AT&T subsidizes every iPhone 4 sold, bringing the cost down for the consumer. Apple doesn’t have those subsidies to rely on when it comes to contract-free devices like the iPad and iPod touch. Thus, in the instance of the iPod touch, it has a lower-grade rear-facing camera, no IPS screen, no GPS, and so on. It’s to cut down on the cost.
