iPhone Now has Field Test Mode for Signal Strength

iPhoneFieldTest

Here’s another vaguely useful little feature tucked away in the new iOS 4.1 on the iPhone.  You can use ‘Field Test Mode’ to test your signal strength.  Here’s how (and you do need to be on iOS 4.1 to use this)

— In the Phone app, type *3001#12345#* on the keypad and hit Call

Your signal bars will be replaced with a number – and apparently the lower the number, the worse the signal strength.  When I tried it just a few minutes ago (here in Austin, TX) mine fluctuated between –93 to –102, while it had been showing nearly full bars.  Good to know – sort of; it would be even better if I knew what some good benchmark figures are to gauge against.  If any of you have good knowledge on this, please enlighten me in the comments.
