Yes! You read right. Prior to iPhone 4 and iOS 4 (Apple’s latest Mobile Operating System) – Locking your iPhone was only done numerically with a 4-digit Passcode lock, but did you know you can opt to have a ‘Password’ instead?

If you’re security conscious and need a bit more protection, iOS 4 comes with an Alphanumeric Password feature allowing you to have any password of your choosing for that extra peace of mind. The mixture of symbols, letters and numbers provides much better protection.

Hit the jump to find out how to activate this feature.

Activating this feature doesn’t require much:

  • Open the Settings app and select General
  • Select Passcode Lock
  • Switch Simple Passcode to OFF

  • Tap Turn Passcode On to activate the full keyboard.
  • Enter a password of your choice and hit next to re-enter it. Tap Done.
  • Next step is to set the required interval when the iPhone prompts for a password before access is granted after lock down.

Option for a 4-digit Passcode Lock still co-exists with this new feature, erasing your data after 10 failed passcode attempts can be activated as well, which should stop thieves or nosey people around you.

To those that didn’t know of this feature, I hope you find this quick tip useful.
