VLC Coming to iPad

I normally don’t report on forthcoming (or even third-party) software releases, but this report got me excited. It turns out that Applidum, with permission from VideoLan, will has submitted a version of VLC to the App Store for review, and hopefully, sale.

After several month of porting, we are proud to announce the release of VLC for the iPad! This application stands out for two reasons. First, it will be available for free on the AppStore. But that’s not all. VLC is an OpenSource project. We are currently preparing our patches for submission to the main VLC tree. And obviously, we will release our current working tree when the app will hit the AppStore. If everything goes well, VLC for the iPad should be available next week.

VLC, is of course, the ever-popular open source media player for the Mac (and PC) that can play just about any media type you can think of. I just wonder how it will work on the iPad. You can’t really download content to view later. Will it be stored within the app? Will the app have some sort of built-in web browser to view the content on other servers? It will be interesting to see how this works, or if Apple even allows on the App Store.
