Review: Ringtone Designer Pro v1.4 for iPhone

Ringtone designer

Custom ringtones might not be to everyone’s taste: some are happy with the defaults that come with iPhones, but many were disappointed with the lack of options to create custom ringtones on the device. Up until now I’ve enlisted the help of various third party programs on my desktop to create them. If, like me, you prefer chopping that favourite part of your song as a custom ringtone, then this updated version of the Ringtone Designer Pro developed by Blackout Labs for the iPhone will do the job on the go. Here’s a brief description of the app:

Ringtone Designer makes it easy to create custom ringtones using music in your iPhone’s iPod library. Simply select a song, and select a short clip you’d like to use for a ringtone. It’s that easy!

It really could not be any simpler using this app: it has that Apple feel to it and the simple  controls and do the job well. In its infancy, I felt it lacked some really important customization options given the price tag,  but that was before v1.4 made its way to the App store recently. Read on to find out what these new improvements are. What’s New In Version 1.4

  • New Fade-In/Out feature! – This was a much requested feature.
  • Improvement in selector knob usability – knobs no longer ‘jump’ when touched – The knobs on the previous versions were a bit out of touch and buggy when trying to find that perfect spot in a song.

Though these were the only two listed under What’s New (maybe because they were the most requested by users), I did notice the inclusion of a time stamp which was missing in previous versions, which made it easier to determine what part of a song you were selecting.

Creating Your Ringtone

  • Launch the app, tap the Musical note button to open up the iPod Library, and then select a song to edit.
  • Choose how much to Fade in/out and specify the length of the ringtone (0-30 seconds).
  • By simply placing a finger on the waveform and dragging left or right, you can choose the part of a song you want to use, and with the help of the time stamp, the process is even more effective now.
  • Hit the Play button to preview the selected part of the song at anytime.

Once you’re happy with your creation, hit the save button and you’re done… for now.

Due to some restrictions by Apple, you are required to connect your device to iTunes to be able to save the created song(s) on your computer via File Sharing under the Apps tab. You’ll then have to drag and drop it back to iTunes. Though this might seem like an arduous task, it is actually painless and straight forward. A simple video guide on how to transfer your created songs is included in the app itself, or you can view it Here.

For a one time fee of £1.19 / $1.99, Ringtone Designer Pro, allows you to create many ringtones. If, however, you don’t agree with the price point (given the number of other free alternatives), Ringtone Designer offers a FREE version with a limitation of two 20 second ringtones at a time and no other customization options.
