Lots of trash talking ends up looking pretty dumb. Then there’s Microsoft trash talking, which takes dumb to a whole new level. After all, their CEO famously predicted just before the original iPhone’s launch that the there was no chance the iPhone would gain any significant market share.
Of course now the iPhone’s market share dwarfs that of Windows phones, and when it comes to app usage, mobile web usage, and customer satisfaction, MS’ offerings trail so far behind they can’t even be seen in iOS’s rear-view mirror.
Despite all that, Microsoft decided that to help mark the RTM release of Windows Phone 7 – their still only almost ready for prime time new mobile OS – it would be a great idea to stage a mock funeral for the iPhone.
I don’t even think this can be classed as proper trash talk. For that, you generally need to be at a similar competitive level to the person / entity you’re aiming your talk at. This one is more like the equivalent of an out-of-shape bowling league player calling out an MMA champ. It’s just laughable.
More appropriate would have been for MS to do a mock birth of the iPhone platform – since they probably contributed as much as any player in the mobile arena in creating the huge void in the smartphone space that the iPhone has happily filled. If they hadn’t spent years displaying zero imagination and innovative thought in terms of their mobile OS and mobile apps delivery (not to mention hardware design), it would have been much tougher for the iPhone to come straight in as a huge game changer.
Here’s hoping their new OS is much, much better done than this moronic marketing effort. And here’s betting it’s absolutely not.
