Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is planning a “digital newsstand” for newspaper content, distributed similarly to the iBookstore. This new feature could be introduced as soon as the next few months.
Apple Inc. is developing a digital newsstand for publishers that would let them sell magazines and newspapers to consumers for use on Apple devices, said two people familiar with the matter.
The newsstand, designed particularly for the iPad, would be similar to Apple’s iBook store for electronic books, said the people, who declined to be identified because the negotiations are private. The newsstand would be separate from Apple’s App Store, where people can buy some publications now, they said.
Reportedly, negotiations with newspapers are still ongoing, with areas of focus such as revenue sharing, pricing, subscriber data and so on. Additionally, it seems Apple could introduce the service within the next few months, but may wait until the release of the second-generation iPad to make the announcement.
The report goes on to note that Apple is also working on tools for content providers, to aid in formatting and creating the digital-format content, and servers so that publishers can get content directly to their customers and update it as needed.
Personally, I would have thought Apple would have rolled this out by now. Regardless, think of the possibilities. Embedded audio and video, automatic updates on breaking stories, the whole shebang. It sounds great.
