Apple Set to License Intellectual Property From Rovi

A filling from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, alongside an announcement from Rovi, that the company has reached a “multi-year agreement” with Apple for access to intellectual property owned by Rovi.

Rovi Corporation (the “Company”) announced today that it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Apple Inc. whereby Apple shall license intellectual property from the Company. The specific terms of the license agreement are confidential.

Rovi, which was founded as Macrovision in the 1980’s, owns technologies in the areas of interactive television program guides and anti-piracy. More interestingly, as 9to5 Mac points out, that Rovi owns a database of metadata related to TV shows, Movies, and music.

Some have speculated that Apple will use these other technologies that Rovi owns, and this is most certainly not out of the realm of possibility, but Apple could just be extending their previous agreements for the use of Rovi’s metadata.
