App Store Now Allows Ringtone Making Apps & I’m Using an Old Favorite

Best Ringtone Maker iPhone app

Well well … here’s another cool result of Apple’s recent changes to App Store review ab=nd acceptance policies: ringtone making apps are now allowed in the store.

My old school favorite ringtone app was iPhoneRingToneMaker from the guys at Gx-5 (used to be Efiko Software). Their latest creation (or offspring of iPhoneRingToneMaker) is called Best Ringtone Maker. I’m very glad to see it in the App Store, and I’ve been giving it a whirl this afternoon.

I’m happy to say the app works great, just as iPhoneRingToneMaker always did, except when Apple broke it with firmware updates. Speaking of which, I’m also glad to hear straight from Tunji at Gx-5 that they feel the whole silly ‘cat and mouse game’ with Apple over ringtone apps is now over.

Best Ringtone Maker lets you create custom ringtones from any of your music in your iTunes library. Right on your iPhone and with no stupid charge of 99 cents extra for it.

It does require a few steps, but they’re relatively quick an easy.  Here’s how it works:

— As soon as you launch the app and tap ‘Create a Ringtone’ you’ll see your full music library that you’ve got on your iPhone. You can use the Playlist, Artist, Song, Albums, and More tabs (just like in the iPod app) to choose the song to use for a new ringtone.

— Once you choose a song, you’ll get a screen where you use a simple slider to choose which section of the track you want to use for the ringtone. Keep in mind the maximum length for a ringtone is 30 seconds. You can preview your selection to make sure it’s the part you want. Once you’re happy with it, just tap ‘Create Ringtone’.

— The app will take a little bi to create the ringtone and will then present you with a link to email yourself for it. This step is needed because Apple requires ringtones to be added via iTunes.

— You’ll then need to click in the link in your email on a desktop PC and open the link in it.  That will take you to a browser page with a download link for the ringtone file in .m4r format. Just double-click on that file and it will be added to iTunes.

— Once you’ve added the file to iTunes, the last step is to sync your iPhone so that the ringtones are added to it.

If you use the superb Pastebot app, you can cut out the email portion of things and paste the link straight into your desktop browser.

That may sound like a lot of steps, but they are all pretty quick ones. I created three new ringtones in just a few minutes right after getting the app.

You can find Best Ringtone Maker in the App Store now, priced at $0.99.
