As a long time OG iPhone user, previous generations of the Otterbox case didn’t really strike me. Usually big and bulky was the name of the Otterbox game, and let’s face it the iPhone is pretty damn sexy. That is…until the Otterbox Defender for iPhone 4 showed up on the block.

The Otterbox for iPhone is hands down the ultimate in protection you can get for your iPhone. There never has been much debate here. The Defender (tech specs) takes this to a whole new level. So let’s begin…

The Good:

First thing I noticed off the bat (once learning how to assemble the bad boy, see Otterbox Instructions) was how responsive the touchscreen performed despite having a clear protective “membrane” covering all of the retina glory. Brightness levels did not seem to be affected either and Otterbox did a killer job coating the cover with anti print magic.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the silicone skin and it’s ability to glide smoothly into and out of my pants pocket. We have all at least seen one of those “impossible to get out of your pocket” cases. The defender also provides easy access to all of your syncing/charging ports and side button features.

Durability wise it gets no better than this. During light testing of the Defender, the iPhone was dropped off several ledges onto concrete and sustained absolutely zero damage to the case and the iPhone. Less extreme scenarios such as dropping on carpet and other lighter surfaces should prove to be no match for the strong polycarbonate shell.

The Bad:

I honestly couldn’t find much wrong with this unit. What it lacks in the skinny/sleek department it more than makes up for if providing the ultimate protection is what you are seeking. It is also leaps and bounds less bulky than its previous generations.

The Meh:

In one test on a 94 degree summer day at noon the case seemed to cause the iPhone to heat up to the point where normal operations would only resume once removing the case.

In conclusion: If you’re in need of medium-heavy protection for your smart phone, this is the ultimate in protection and won’t cost you an arm and a leg. The OtterBox Defender is hands down the best solution I’ve seen to date if you’re looking for the perfect combination of protection while preserving the sleek and sexiness of your iPhone 4. The OtterBox Defender case, as well as the rest of the iPhone 4 case line, can be found here. The Defender is now available for $49.95.
