Mini Disclaimer: I have done a little video work for the SoundHound website in the past, although I had nothing to do with the update I’m describing now.
I’ve always thought that SoundHound ($4.99, review here) looked way better than its main competitor, Shazam, and this update has only deepened the divide between the two. The various UI elements in v3.4 (the mini player, main screen, iPod library) feel more like they were designed to fit together in one app, instead of feature additions added in version 1.x and 1.xx.
In particular, the main screen now sports a much cleaner layout, with both the text and voice search fields set right next to one another. I also really like the improvements to the mini player (which was always a good idea — but simply didn’t look as good before) and the iPod library (which now has the same alphabet scrollbar that the iPod app has).
There are still a few elements of the app that look a little out of place (the top of the Now Playing screen, for example) or just a bit too crowded (the iTunes, Bookmark, and Share buttons look rather squished together in one line), but as a whole, I think that version 3.4 is a lot more user-friendly, and just plain fun to use.
