My iPhone 3GS this morning: Mail.app crashes, disappearing Safari icon

There are good iPhone mornings, sad iPhone mornings, and then there’s the one I experienced today. I woke up to six e-mails in my inbox and tried to check them, but had Mail.app crash on me. So I reloaded it and tried again, but this time all of my Gmail messages disappeared, then re-appeared one by one, and then Mail crashed. This went on and on for a few more attempts until I gave up and tried a respring. Unfortunately, the first re-spring didn’t seem to do anything. Mail.app still crashed.

“Okay,” I thought, “How about if I just check my Gmail from within Safari?”.

That’s when things got a little bit weirder. I tapped on the Safari icon only to have it disappear from beneath my finger. Poof. Gone. In the spot where the icon used to be was just a blank space. I was so weirded out by this that I took a screenshot just to make sure this wasn’t some sort of weird dream (yes, I’m geeky enough to have iPhone dreams).

I’ve seen this kind of behaviour on Windows Mobile while using skinning tools, but until today, iOS has been one of the most rock solid operating systems I’ve ever used (and to be clear: I’m not using any Springboard tweaks or any Winterboard themes aside from Typophone 4).

In any case, a second respring cleared up the Safari issue and allowed me to check Gmail using the web app, and this seems to have been the key to getting my Mail.app back to normal. Both Mail and Safari are working just fine again, although I think this was some very, very weird stuff, to say the least. Anybody seen this kind of behaviour on iOS 4.x?
