CDMA / Verizon iPhone Rumors Boiling Over

The rumors about the iPhone coming to Verizon soon / next year etc. have been around for nearly as long as the iPhone itself. You could have probably kept pretty busy running a site covering nothing else these last couple of years at least. If rumors are sometimes talked of as heating up and getting hot and so forth, it really is starting to feel as if this one is just about full cooked.

As John Gruber at Daring Fireball points out, the Wall Street Journal now talks about this as a done deal

AT&T Inc. is about to lose its lock on the iPhone.

Apple Inc. is making a version of its iPhone that Verizon Wireless will sell early next year, according to people familiar with the matter …

Apple Insider reports today that a new CDMA version of the iPhone may also go to one of China’s biggest wireless carriers and to other nations with CDMA carriers.

Gruber and others have also been reporting for some time now that work on a CDMA iPhone is at an advanced stage.

It feels to me like this is one of those rumors that can barely be classed as such anymore, one that is only awaiting an Apple ‘special event’ to announce a new model that should result in many millions of new iPhone owners one way or the other.

I’m content enough with AT&T (and have shedloads of rollover minutes on a nice family plan with them) – so a Verizon iPhone won’t be for me, but I’m always happy to see the iPhone expanding its potential market.
