Preview: The Incident 1.2 Brings Endlessness and Controller Mode

The Incident is already, at the very least, the best physics based, retro styled action game in which random objects fall from the sky I’ve ever played. It’s rare that a game concept this bizarre pans out so well. Big Bucket sure has some magic fingers massaging those OpenGL muscles, and The Incident is hands down the happiest ending we could have oh dear I took that too far.

Version 1.2 was just submitted to Apple about a week ago. Big Bucket was kind enough to “let me” beta test the new features, and let me tell you, hoo boy, it’s a biggie.

The first and most obvious new feature is an infinite survival mode called Endless Nightfall, featuring new music, ramping difficulty, and of course, endlessness. And with a survival mode must come a leaderboard, and indeed, The Incident now supports leaderboards on Game Center.

The coolest new feature, though, lets you connect the iPad version of the game to the iPhone version and use the iPhone as a controller. A few simple taps are all it takes to set it up over WiFi or Bluetooth, and as soon as you prop your iPad up and start playing, you’ll feel like a kid with his first Nintendo all over again. The controls feel exactly like they would if you were holding the iPad itself, with no discernable lag whatsoever. It even makes the game easier to play, as you’re no longer getting vertigo by tilting your giant screen of an iPad back and forth.

This all comes with a big bucket full (hahahahaha) of tweaks and bug fixes, new items, and Retina Display support, the last of which my poor, deprived, 3GS-clinging self could not try out, but I hear it’s lovely. Finally, the oft-spamable Escape Bubble must now be recharged between uses. I know I was abusing it.

The Incident version 1.2 is awaiting approval by Apple and should be available soon.

I’m Ray Merkler, and I now bid JAiB adieu. Farewell!
